“Did you like it?”, He
asked handing over the cup of coffee.
“What? Ouch, hot!!”,
She took a sip of the coffee and it almost burnt her tongue.
"Of course, it
will be hot, it is not cold coffee", he smiled. “Money Heist! Did you like
it?”
"Oh yeah, such a
gripping one. I am still on season 3 though."
He laughed, “haha,
already season 3? Wow. I knew you would like it!”
She smiled and looked
at him. It has been a while that they sat down to have coffee and these small
conversations. It has been a while she has seen him laughing for something like
this.
When they were
newly-weds, they would probably not have imagined a day like this. Watching a
tv show or movie without each other was similar to breaking each other’s trust.
Once he was busy in back to back calls, and she watched an episode of Breaking
Bad while chopping vegetables; she had to spend two days to pursue him. That
was their way to express love, it was their thing to watch movies or a series
together. But things changed after they had the baby and changed further when
they shifted to the new city. Probably it happens with every couple, but not
them, they were not okay with the change. They tried. He would try staying up,
she would try waking up early to spend some time together, to watch the next
episode together. They soon realized it was not sustainable, with crazy
demanding jobs, shifts of work and the kiddo growing up; having that “us” time
was nearly impossible. They eventually gave up, they did fight, got upset with
each other as they were watching the next episode just by themselves; but soon
realized – “this is the new normal”.
This is probably the
part of growing up, the definition of love is always evolving and changing.
From watching shows together, to watching them alone, making recommendations
and hearing each-others feedback.. love grew, their relationship grew. Maybe
this is the fun of growing old together. She smiled, as she leaned on his
shoulder.
“yes, we have grown.
But will these small coffee conversations also end and get replaced with
something else as we get busier in our lives” he thought and sighed!!
A sip of coffee and
the sunset from the window, may-be they will try to keep this as their “our
thing” for a while!!

A natural transition... And many more such new normals to follow. 🙂 Very well articulated!
